Drying a wet basement carpet
In this article, we will assume that your basement was flooded with clean water. The first step is shutting off the source of the water. The next assumption is that the cost of the carpet is less than your insurance deductible or that you want to do it yourself to avoid a filling a claim.
The next step is extracting water from the carpet, but before doing so you have to ensure that you switch off all sources of power in the basement. This will reduce the chances of being electro-circuited when cleaning your carpet. You can use a stronger vacuum cleaner, but not the normal wet/dry vacuum since it doesn’t have enough power. Alternatively, you can rent an extractor or carpet cleaner, an air mover fan or two and a large commercial dehumidifier.
Using an extractor as it is 1,200 times more effective than a dehumidifier. You should move the extractor slowly across the carpet so that it can suck up as much water as possible. After you have removed all the water from your carpet, peel back the carpeting. Cut the wet pad into strips, roll it up and put it outside. In case the weather is hot, dry and sunny, you can try drying it yourself by rolling it out in your yard or driveway. If this works, you can reinstall the strips by taping them back together. Remember that the new carpet pad is cheap, so you should not waste a lot of time trying to dry the pads.
After these lay your carpet back on the floor and fire up the air movers and rental dehumidifier. Keeping the temperature at or below 75 degrees F. Don’t use higher temp since this will accelerate bacterial growth in your basement inducing growth of molds.
Inspect the condition of the wall insulation. In case you don’t have insulation and you dried out the basement quickly, you do not have to replace the drywall. But if the insulation is wet you have to discard it since it cannot be saved.
