When a hot cup of tea, accidental water spillage, or if some other liquid leaves a mark on your wood furniture or floor this should not worry you. Since most of the time, it is quite easy to restore your furniture to its original beautiful look. In this article, we will offer you ways of removing water stains on your wooden furniture.
How to get rid of water marks from wood?
Determining the extent of the damage
The first thing you have to do is determine how deep the damage is. This can be done by checking the color of the stain or watermark. Stains and marks that are left behind by liquid or steam are white or light-colored. This means that the stains have not penetrated deeply in your furniture. They are just on the waxed or polished surface. A dark stain indicates that the liquid has gone deeper through the finish on the wood and also through the wood itself. If this is the case, it’s hard to fix it with your bare hands. The following methods can be used to remove the watermarks.
1) Use baking powder.
You can use baking powder to remove white marks caused by hot cups or sweating warm beverages on your wooden coffee table or any other wooden furniture. This can be done by mixing one tablespoon of baking soda with one teaspoon water to make a paste. Then gently rub this paste on the stained spot in a circular motion until the watermark disappears.
2) Use petroleum jelly.
Petroleum jelly can be used to remove watermark rings left on your wood furniture by warm glasses or cups. This can be done by applying petroleum jelly on the mark and leave it to sit overnight. Wipe it in the morning and it will peel off together with the stain.
3) Use salts.
You can also remove watermarks left by glasses or wet bottles by using salt. This can be done by mixing one teaspoon salt with a few drops of water to make a paste. Then rub this paste onto the ring with a soft cloth or sponge up to the moment that you will note that the stain is no more. Since this paste distorts the luster of your wood, you should restore it using furniture polish.
4) Use toothpaste.
You host a party in your house and your friends forget to use coasters and therefore the sweating beers leave marks on your beautiful wooden furniture. You can get rid of the watermark rings left by gently rubbing some non-gel toothpaste on the stains left on your furniture using a soft cloth. Wipe off the toothpaste using a damp cloth and let it dry. Apply furniture polish when stains are removed. If you need a stronger cleaning power you should mix equal parts of white toothpaste and baking soda. Then apply the paste parallel to the wood grain, wipe it off, and lastly polish the furniture with lemon oil.
